Center for Energy and Sustainability
The Center for Energy and Sustainability (CES) advances the University’s commitment to environmental stewardship with the following as its main areas of emphasis:
- To promote sustainability practices that meet the needs of the current campus community while preserving resources for future generations, ensuring that environmental, economic, and social impacts are balanced to support long-term campus viability.
- To prioritize energy and utility management, sustainable building design, and responsible resource stewardship, leveraging engineering innovation to support a more efficient, resilient, and environmentally conscious campus environment.
- To educate and engage students, faculty, staff, and the community in sustainability initiatives, fostering awareness, participation, and shared responsibility for the University’s environmental impact.
- To build upon a strong foundation of engineering and systems-based improvements, beginning with the establishment of the Center for Energy Efficiency (CEE) in 1999 and the transition to a cleaner cogeneration system in 1998, and continuing through key initiatives such as the Sustainable Campus Fund, MTSU Recycles, and the Green Power Purchase program.
- To pursue a long-term vision of a data-informed, technology-driven sustainable campus, enhancing energy efficiency, operational performance, and environmental stewardship through continuous innovation and strategic planning.

What Does Sustainability Mean To Us?
Sustainability is shaping our campus to meet the needs of the current community while ensuring future generations have equal access to resources. It involves balancing the environmental, economic, and social impacts of our decisions to maintain our campus viability.
Our Mission
The Center for Energy and Sustainability (CES) prioritizes energy and utility management, sustainable building design, and resource stewardship to foster a greener campus. We are committed to educating students and the community, encouraging student involvement in sustainability initiatives, and leveraging engineering innovation to ensure a thriving environment for current and future generations of students.
History and Vision
The CES was established as the Center for Energy Efficiency (CEE) in 1999, following the construction of the Cogeneration Plant in 1998. This transition from a coal-fired steam plant to a cleaner, gas-fired cogeneration system marked the start of our engineering-driven approach to creating a sustainable campus. As the CEE evolved, we invested in various green initiatives supporting our mission, including the Sustainable Campus Fund, MTSU Recycles, and the Green Power Purchase program. Looking ahead, the CES envisions a sustainable campus that utilizes data and technology to continually advance efficiency and environmental stewardship.
